A Bengali woman’s achievement has helped integrate multicultural and multinational Britain into mainstream politics. Bengalis have shown they can be elected as public officials and perform their duties excellently. Jyotsna Islam, a former deputy mayor and current councillor, has been named Mayor of the London Borough of Redbridge, and the local residents are pleased with her appointment.
The new Mayor, who will represent the borough and chair full council meetings for the next year, was elected at a full council meeting last the 18th of May, 2023.
Cllr Jyotsna Islam spoke at the council chamber: “Being nominated as Redbridge’s Mayor is a tremendous honour and immense responsibility. “I’m very humbled and privileged, and I will endeavour to be fair, to be supportive of the most deprived and marginalised residents of our borough, an authority at the council meetings and also to be a fun, approachable and sociable mayor.”
Jyotsna Islam has achieved remarkable achievements thanks to her husband’s unwavering support. Their family has resided with their son and daughter in the London Borough of Redbridge for several years. Jyotsna’s childhood roots trace back to North Molaim village, Ekatuna Union, Moulvibazar Sadar Upazila, as the daughter of the late Abdur Rahman (Mannaf Mia), a distinguished London merchant and social worker, and Begum Muhibunnahar. Despite being born in London in 1966, Jyotsna eventually relocated to Bangladesh with her parents. Their family greatly emphasised education, literature, culture, and social surroundings in both Bangladesh and the United Kingdom, instilling a strong sense of determination and ambition in Jyotsna.
For this reason, Jyotsna islam studied at Ali Amjad Government High School and Moulvibazar Government University in Moulvibazar. Apart from studies, she was also very good at sports. She also won many medals by participating in various sports competitions at the local and divisional levels. She returned to London in 1986, did an MBA, and worked in the local government. In addition, she does TV programs for the Bengali Sports Council and various social services for the Bangladeshi community.
She also holds prestigious positions, such as co-founder of the Redbridge Boishakhi Mela Trust, founder and chairperson of Cinebuzz Film Productions and Cinebuzz Times Magazine, and trustee and consultant for many charitable organisations.
We offer our sincere congratulations to the recently elected Mayor, Cllr. Jyotsna Islam. We are confident that she possesses the necessary strength and wisdom to successfully accomplish her goals for the betterment of all people with the blessings of the Almighty.
