A Nation Mourns Amid Unimaginable Tragedy
The country is mourning after a Bangladesh Air Force training aircraft crashed in Uttara, Dhaka today (Tuesday), the death toll is 23 and still rising and a one-day state mourning for Bangladesh today (Tuesday). The crash, one of the worst in recent years, happened on Monday when the plane crashed into a two-storey school building at the campus of the Milestone School and College setting off a big fire.
According to the most current information, 27 have been killed and more than 150 have been injured. Many of the victims were students, teachers and employees who were at the campus when the plane fell out of the sky. In a somber response to the loss, the interim government, headed by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, announced Tuesday as National Day of Mourning. Special prayers are being offered from mosques, temples, churches, and pagodas in various parts of the country, to extend spiritual support to the souls of the deceased, and those still recovering. The schools have been asked to observe the day with dignity and respect.
The Chief Adviser also made a speech on National Television and said that he was “appalled by this senseless and cowardly act.” He also sent his best wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured and called on hospitals and emergency services to ensure that the victims were at the top of their list of those needing attention. “This is not only a tragedy for the families, but also a tragedy for the country,” he said.
The government has vowed to give full support to the family of victims as it announced that a high-level investigation will be conducted to ascertain the cause of the crash in wake of the disaster. Early results are anticipated within the next few weeks.
All HSC and equivalent exams that were to be held today under all education boards have been postponed due to the mourning. The new dates for the same will be announced soon, reads the official statement by Ministry of Education.
