Formerly Economic Secretary to the Treasury
Tulip Siddiq, the erstwhile Economic Secretary to the Treasure and former City Minister, was forced to resign as a minister on the 14th of January in 2025 due to her close familial associations and financial holdings regarding her aunt, Sheikh Hasina who had lost power as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh.

Tulip Rizwana Siddiq was born on September 16, 1982, in London and has served as the Labour Member of Parliament for Hampstead and Highgate since 2015. Previous roles include shadow economic secretary to the Treasury, and Shadow Minister for Children and Early Years. She became financial secretary to the Treasury and City Minister in July 2024 under Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Resignation Details
Siddiq’s resignation came after Laurie Magnus, the adviser on ministerial standards, investigated her use of properties owned by individuals with connections to her aunt’s regime. The investigation found no indication of financial impropriety or violation of the ministerial code. But Magnus also said that missing records and the passing of time made it impossible to provide total clarity on all property questions. Siddiq admitted that it became a distraction for the government and decided to resign in order for it not to deviate the focus of the government from its agenda.
Succession and Political Considerations
Tulip Siddiq’s decision underscores politicians’ challenges when navigating the conflict between personal and familial ties and public concerns. Notwithstanding her exoneration from legal culpability, her resignation affirms the importance of upholding governmental integrity and its objectives.
