Tulip has Starmer’s confidence despite anti-graft probe

Sir Keir Starmer stands by Tulip Siddiq as the Bangladeshi government investigates fraud claims.

Downing Street said Ms. Siddiq, the anti-corruption minister, “denied any involvement in the allegations” and would stay in her job.

The Prime Minister’s official spokeswoman insisted that Sir Keir still had confidence in her. When asked about the conflict-of-interest allegations, he replied, “I cannot comment on actions taken before a minister’s tenure in government.”

He stated that ministers adhered to a “distinct declaration process.”

The source dismisses the allegations as “spurious.”

Bangladesh’s Anti-Corruption Commission conducted an investigation into the aunt of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Hasina is taking a risk by misappropriating £5.2 billion to construct a nuclear reactor and eight other significant construction projects. Hasina is under investigation in South Asia by anti-corruption inspectors.

People close to Ms. Siddiq are describing the claims as “spurious.” The Tories say there are “serious questions to answer,” putting her under pressure to reply.

A spokesman for the Conservative Party: “The corruption minister must explain these allegations against her.” “Significant problems emerge.

The allegations against Ms. Hasina’s political rival, Bobby Hajjaj, a longtime UK resident, have compelled the Bangladeshi government to look into them, which could strain ties between the UK and Bangladesh.

Mr. Hajjaj claims that Ms. Siddiq brokered deals for the Roopu power plant, a Bangladeshi-Russian agreement, as seen in a court record by the BBC. Ms. Hasina and her family allegedly embezzled from the agreement.

A 2013 Associated Press film portrays Ms. Siddiq at the Kremlin, witnessing her aunt’s agreement with Vladimir Putin.
