Sylhet Flood Updates

22nd Jun’24

The Flood Forecast and Warning Centre of the Bangladesh Water Development Board has projected an improvement in the current flood situation in the low-lying areas of Netrokona, Sylhet, and Sunamganj districts within the next 24 hours. On Friday, June 21, a “UNICEF Country Representative” in Bangladesh expressed “deep concern” about the dire flood situation in the northern part of Bangladesh, where flash floods have already affected over 2 million people, including over 772,000 children, and they urgently require assistance. Children are most susceptible as waters rise; they run more risk of drowning, starvation, fatal waterborne infections, trauma from displacement, and even abuse in overpopulated shelters, according to a “UNICEF Country Representative”.

Situation in Sylhet District:-

Flooding affected approximately 675,000 individuals in Sylhet, encompassing all 13 upazilas and low-lying areas of the city. In Sylhet, there were 17,825 isolated individuals.

The Surma River was flowing 91 centimetres above the danger threshold in Kanaighat, Sylhet, at 9:00 a.m. this morning, according to the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB). This is a decrease from the 122 centimetres of water that flowed yesterday (June 21).

Despite these reductions, the Surma remains above Sylhet city’s hazard levels, which are 37 cm. According to the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB), the Kushiyara was 43 centimetres above the danger level at Amalshid point in Zakiganj, 92 centimetres above the danger level in Fenchuganj, and 12 centimetres above the danger level in Sherpur.

The Gowain River was streaming nine centimeters above the danger level in the Sylhet district’s Gowainghat upazila. The Bangladesh Army has been preventing inundation at the Baraikandi power substation in Sylhet since the previous night (November 21), according to the Sylhet district administration.

Situation in Sunamganj District:-

At nine o’clock this morning (June 22), the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) reported that the river had exceeded the danger level by more than 146 cm. The river’s level has dropped from 158 centimeters since yesterday evening (June 21).

Although there has been a decrease, the water level of the Surma River still exceeds the hazardous thresholds in Sunamganj town (40 cm) and Dirai in Sunamganj (16 cm). According to the Sunamganj district government, the water level of the Surma River has somewhat decreased due to less rainfall from the river’s headwaters. As a direct result, the water level in the city has decreased.

Situation in Moulvibazar District:-

Severe flooding in the Moulvibazar district has resulted in the displacement of 193,990 residents from 432 villages. In Moulvibazar, inundation has caused damage to 37 of the 72 unions, according to the district government.

The district government has established 88 sanctuaries to accommodate the displaced residents. In Moulvibazar, inundation has caused damage to 37 of the 72 unions, according to the district government. The district government has established ninety-eight sanctuaries to accommodate the displaced residents.

Inundation in the broader Hakaluki Haor region also affects the upazilas of Kulaura, Juri, and Barlekha. In addition, the excessive rainfall has resulted in flooding in the low-lying areas of Srimangal and Kamalganj upazilas.

Situation in Habiganj District:-

As a result, the flood situation in the Habiganj district has not changed, as stated by the District Relief and Disaster Management Office. Shelters are now housing a decreasing number of people.
