Johnny donates $1.0m settlement from Amber Heard to charity

After receiving a USD 1 million settlement from ex-wife Amber Heard, Johnny Depp has donated the entire sum to various charities.

Sources close to the “Pirates of the Caribbean” told the media that Depp would donate USD 200,000 each to five charities. The donation will go to charities that benefit sick children, conserve the environment, and provide safe housing for underserved communities.

Namely, they include Make-A-Film, The Painted Turtle, Red Feather, Teitaroa Society, and Amazonia Fund Alliance.

Johnny Depp wins lawsuit against ex-wife Amber Heard

In March 2019, Depp filed a USD 50 million defamation lawsuit against Heard after the Washington Post published an op-ed she wrote about being the victim of domestic violence. While Depp’s name was not mentioned in the article, the story came out at a time when their contentious divorce continued to make headlines.

After weeks of back-and-forth in the courtroom, the jury ultimately sided with Depp in June of 2022, and the 60-year-old actor was awarded USD 10 million in compensatory damages and USD 5 million in punitive damages. However, the punitive damages were later reduced to USD 350,000.

Even though Depp won the defamation trial, the same jury also found Depp liable, citing comments previously made by Depp’s lawyer, Adam Waldman—where he had referred to Heard’s claims as a “hoax”. That counterclaim awarded Heard USD 2 million in compensatory damages.

In December, Heard ultimately settled the case, saying, “I have made no admission. This is not an act of concession. There are no restrictions or gags concerning my voice moving forward.
