                                          People’s misconceptions about jaundice

INTRODUCTION:

Jaundice is a word familiar to everyone. Almost everyone knows about this disease. If it is not treated in time, the disease can become complicated and even cause death. It causes the skin and eyes to appear yellow due to the increase in the yellow pigment called bilirubin in the body.

The word jaundice comes from the French word ‘jaundice’, which means yellowish. Jaundice generally refers to an “inflammatory” condition of the liver.

 I am talking about this condition because jaundice is not a disease, it is only a symptom of the disease. Therefore, if you have jaundice, you must understand that your liver is diseased for some reason.

Definition of jaundice:

Jaundice may be defined as yellow discolouration of the skin, sclera and mucous membranes due to an increased bilirubin concentration in the body fluid above normal.

  • Normal serum bilirubin:0.3-1.0mg/dl
  • Clinical jaundice: when bilirubin exceeds 3.0mg/dl
  • Latent jaundice: clinically, there is no jaundice, but serum bilirubin is more than normal but less than 3mg/dl.

Signs and symptoms of jaundice:

 Every disease is preceded by signs and symptoms that tell us what is wrong with our bodies. But despite the fact that jaundice is a symptom of the disease, some of its signs or symptoms are observed.

 Now we will know what changes happen in our bodies, and we will understand that we have jaundice-

* Yellowing of the eyes and urine is the main symptom of jaundice.

 In many cases, the whole body can also take a dark yellow colour if the problem is more.

* A feeling of fever or chills,

* nausea or vomiting,

* Mild or severe abdominal pain,

 *physical weakness,

* loss of appetite,

* itching,

* headache,

* weight loss, Hardening of the liver etc.

Through the above symptoms, we can understand whether we have jaundice.

Types of Jaundice:

 There are three types of jaundice :

  1. Hemolytic or pre-hepatic jaundice.

Eg-Thalassemia,malaria

  • Hepatocellular or hepatic jaundice.

Eg-Viral hepatitis, cirrhosis, pregnancy

  • Obstructive or post hepatic jaundice.

Eg-Stone in the common bile duct, biliary stricture, cancer.

 There is also another type of jaundice called neonatal, mainly seen in newborn babies.

(TC,DC,Hb,PBF)

C.Urine Examination-

b.Urobilinogen

c.Bike salts

D.Stool examination for stercobilinogen

Conclusions:

There are some misconceptions about jaundice in our society, which are full of mistakes, without scientific basis and in some cases, harmful. Like-

  Many say there is no allopathic treatment for jaundice, which is completely wrong information.

 Consuming Kabiraji medicine does not cure jaundice, rather, it damages the body in some cases. Drinking cold water, sugarcane syrup, and canned water repeatedly does not cure jaundice. A person should drink 2-2.5 litres daily at normal temperature.

 If you want to eat, you can eat. But eating too much causes stomach gas. As a result, appetite for other foods decreases.

 If any person feels the symptoms of jaundice must go to the doctor.   The doctor will first diagnose the cause of the patient’s jaundice and provide advice and treatment.
