MUMBAI: After weeks of speculation and tense exchange of words revolving around the two sides concerned the cricketing superpowers, India and Pakistan and their respective governments, the calendar for the 2025 Asia Cup has finally been pencilled in. The championship would be held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from September 9 till 28, said Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Chairperson Mohsin Naqvi.
Announcing the development on social media X [previously known as Twitter], Naqvi wrote,
“I am delighted to announce the fixtures for the 2025 Asia Cup, to be held in the United Arab Emirates from 9 – 28 September. We anticipate an action-packed tournament.”
No date was given, when the fixtures list will be made public, but the public announcement of the dates and location is a crucial step in the process of organising the event, which had got caught in regional politics.
A Neutral Site of Fiery Rivalry
Although the official hosts for this edition of the Asia Cup are India, the games will be played in the UAE. The move was prompted by a continuing diplomatic impasse between the two South Asian rivals, which have not played bilateral cricket home and away for several years amid hostile political ties. Holding the tournament at a neutral venue was a compromise the two cricket boards had reached in their previous meetings.
Uncertainty around the tournament had increased earlier this year when military tensions flared between India and Pakistan in May, leading to rumours the tournament could be boycotted. Questions were even asked if the two nations would be willing to play each other on the field of play, even in a neutral venue.
Virtual Meets and a Stressful Goings-On
Before the announcement, the ACC had held its annual general meeting online as the Indian cricket board opted not to join the in-person session in Dhaka. Chairperson of the ACC Mohsin Naqvi had hinted at a resolution being round the corner as during a virtual meeting.
With the dates already announced and the UAE as the decided venue, the attention now turns towards the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which will soon come up with the official match schedule.

Behind the scenes there has been political drama aplenty, but one of Asia’s biggest sporting events is now set to go ahead and cricket fans can rejoice.
