Backache or back pain

Back pain is a distressing condition or symptom that affects the human body. Countless men and women around the world fall victim to this disease. Typically, individuals in the age range of 30 to 55 years experience this type of pain. Research indicates that a significant proportion, ranging from 60 to 80 percent, of individuals across the globe have either encountered or are susceptible to experiencing back pain at some stage in their lives. As performance decreases, individuals also lose working time. In addition to that, there is also the factor of emotional distress and financial loss. The high cost of treatment is a cause for concern.

A study conducted in the UK discovered that approximately 7% of individuals between the ages of 25 and 55 annually visit a doctor due to experiencing back pain. The annual cost of medical care amounts to approximately £500 million, resulting in a loss of eight million working days. In Bangladesh, about 20 to 25 percent of the population experiences back pain or other types of pain.

Causes of back pain

Now, we have a better understanding of the factors contributing to back pain and which individuals are more susceptible to developing this condition.

The causes of back pain can vary between individuals under 40 and those in their forties. The causes of back pain vary depending on age and gender. Physically demanding activities, such as carrying or lifting heavy objects, prolonged standing or sitting, frequent bending forward, and maintaining a seated position for extended periods commonly cause back pain. Falls or injuries are common causes of back pain. Bone loss can also contribute to this pain. The term used to describe this type of pain is ‘degenerative disorder’.

Furthermore, back pain can be caused by various conditions, such as infection, tuberculosis, and cancer, as well as gallbladder and pancreatic diseases.

Knee pain

As individuals age, particularly in older or middle-aged individuals, various factors can cause knee pain. Approximately 25 to 30 percent of individuals between 30 and 60 experience knee pain. Knee pain is a prevalent type of arthritis, typically affecting slightly older individuals. In general, women experience a higher prevalence of knee pain compared to men. Women in this particular scenario experience simultaneous knee pain in both knees. As individuals age, the cartilage in their knees undergoes structural changes and may begin to deteriorate. As individuals age, the bones, cartilage, and joints gradually deteriorate. Minor erosion may not always exhibit noticeable symptoms.

Consequently, patients maintain their normal state. However, when the level of corrosion is high, patients may experience various symptoms in their bodies. Some examples of symptoms include loss of movement, knee pain, swelling, and the accumulation of fluid in the knee. You should only visit the doctor for back pain if it is severe. To alleviate mild pain, taking a small dose of pain medication and following the prescribed regimen can often lead to an improvement in pain levels. There are several measures that can be taken to alleviate discomfort in many cases. These include sleeping on a firm mattress, applying hot compresses to the waist, taking a day or two to rest, and using over-the-counter pain relievers in moderation. If you are experiencing severe back pain, seeking medical advice from a doctor is advisable. In this situation, seeking advice from a physical medicine specialist is crucial.

What to do with knee pain

It is crucial to accurately identify the specific cause of knee pain, regardless of age or underlying factors. In certain situations, it can be confidently stated that a disease will be cured or effectively managed when it is confirmed through appropriate examination and treatment. Using physical therapy in conjunction with medication offers numerous benefits for treating knee pain. In this scenario, a specialist doctor in physical medicine plays the primary supporting role.
