The UNGA has, with an overwhelming support from all regional groups, adopted the Bangladesh sponsored flagship annual resolution titled “Follow-up to the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace.”
The resolution (initially proposed by Bangladesh in 1999) has become a signature of the country’s diplomatic image, which stands for universal values regardless of political and territorial boundaries – respect for diversity, tolerance, solidarity, and non-violence.
It was with a renewed sense of urgency that this resolution was introduced in this year’s session in New York by Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the UN. In her address to the delegates, she underscored the immense importance of developing a culture of peace at a personal level, particularly at a time when the world is suffering from increasing conflicts, humanitarian disasters, and a rising absence of compassion between nations.
“Peace is not merely the absence of war,” she said. “It’s a way of life, of thought, of teaching our children a system that starts from the bottom and goes to the top.”
An impressive 96 Member States from all regions co-sponsored this year’s resolution, indicating wide support for the principles it promotes. The Culture of Peace resolution is an action plan that functions as a strategic tool to help countries around the world move to a culture of peace based on education, dialogue, and cooperative action in association with potential partners, in particular youth and those living in different socio-economic and cultural paradigms.
“And the taking of this resolution also reaffirms Bangladesh’s abiding commitment to global peacebuilding.” It is a commitment based not just on policy, but on Bangladesh’s own historical journey, where the struggle for freedom was, at its core, a struggle for justice, equity, and dignity.
For Bangladesh, this moment should not all be about diplomatic success; it should be about global leadership in values that count. In an era of deepening polarizations, the country’s voice for peace could not feel more urgent nor, at the same time, more timeless.
