Neymar’s long road back

Surgery, sacrifice, and a World Cup dream

At 33, Neymar knows his body better than most—and he knows pain all too well. This week, the Brazilian superstar took another decisive step in his battle against injuries, undergoing successful surgery on his left knee to repair a damaged meniscus. Confirmed by Santos, the procedure offers renewed hope at the end of one of the most demanding seasons of his storied career.

Neymar’s return to Santos was meant to be a feel-good homecoming: the prodigal son returning to inspire, lead, and reconnect with his roots. Instead, it became a test of endurance. Carrying the meniscus injury for much of the campaign, he continued to play through pain as Santos fought to avoid relegation from Brazil’s top division. His commitment proved vital on the pitch—but costly off it. Eventually, surgery became unavoidable.

The operation was performed arthroscopically by the Brazilian national team’s long-time doctor, a familiar figure in Neymar’s medical journey. This is the same specialist who treated him after a severe foot fracture and, more significantly, the ruptured anterior cruciate ligament he suffered against Uruguay in October 2023. That injury sidelined him for months and abruptly halted his international momentum.

According to Santos, Neymar is expected to be sidelined for around one month—a relatively short recovery window that keeps several doors open. His current contract runs until the end of the year, but talks over a possible extension are already underway. Much, however, will depend on how his knee responds once he returns to full training and competitive action.

Beyond club football, the bigger picture looms large. Neymar has not worn the famous yellow shirt of Brazil national football team for more than two years—an extraordinary absence for the country’s all-time leading goalscorer. With 79 goals in 128 appearances, his place in Brazilian football history is secure. Yet, for Neymar, legacy alone is not enough.

His eyes are firmly set on the 2026 FIFA World Cup. To get there, he knows he must first rebuild his body, then his rhythm, and finally his place in the national setup. That ambition may soon intersect with a familiar managerial name. Brazil’s coaching future is increasingly linked with Carlo Ancelotti, and Neymar believes a strong comeback could put him back on the radar of the veteran coach.

For a player who has dazzled at Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, one final World Cup campaign would be a fitting conclusion to a career defined by brilliance, expectation, and misfortune in equal measure.

For now, the focus is simpler—and more complex: recovery, patience, and belief. Neymar’s journey has never followed a straight line, but resilience has always been his defining trait. As Brazilian fans wait and hope, one question lingers in the air: could this surgery mark the beginning of Neymar’s final, triumphant act on football’s biggest stage?
