Redbridge Champions New Year’s Day Parade

London Borough of Redbridge proudly showcased a compelling message on environmental conservation during the 2024 London New Year’s Day Parade, held on January 1st at the heart of London. Led by Honey Kalaria, a renowned choreographer and artistic director, the Redbridge team delivered a mesmerizing entry, emphasizing the critical importance of preserving our planet.

Last year, their exceptional performance secured the 1st prize of £15,000, benefitting the Mayor’s selected charities. This year, their dedication aimed to raise funds for the Mayor’s two selected charities, ELHAP and London Air Ambulance.

Under the visionary leadership of Councillor Jyotsna Islam, Mayor of Redbridge, and Honey Kalaria, District Environment Chair of Rotary in London, the community representatives presented an enthralling display centered around the theme “Saving Our Planet.” This groundbreaking initiative involved donating educational books titled “Lets Save Our Planet” by Julie Wornan and Philippe Honnore to local schools in Redbridge, instilling environmental awareness among younger generations and stressing the importance of preserving our planet’s delicate balance.

The parade entry showcased performers spanning diverse age groups, symbolizing unity and determination in advocating for environmental protection.

The performance highlighted the urgency of safeguarding vital ecosystems like the Amazon Forest in South America and preserving the cultural heritage of indigenous communities living there.

Accompanied by a specially remixed version of the “Mother Earth Song” by Music producer Chajan, and wearing vibrant costumes designed by Mahogany Carnival, the group symbolized nature’s elements, wildlife, and addressed the impact of deforestation creatively. They aimed to raise awareness about safeguarding our planet’s treasures, such as the Amazon Forest and the rich cultural legacy of indigenous communities.

The parade included performers from the South American community, orchestrated by Joshua, President of the South American Dance Federation. They skillfully represented the cultural costumes of various indigenous communities, adding a rich tapestry of diversity to the vibrant display of unity and environmental advocacy.

“The London Borough of Redbridge’s dedication to environmental preservation and inspiring a brighter, greener future for the upcoming generations is commendable. In my municipal year, I am working tirelessly to raise funds in support of my chosen charities – London’s Air Ambulance, in dire need of upgraded helipads serving all London Boroughs, and ELHAP, a charity for disabled autistic children and their families, whose support is crucial to prevent the center from closing down,” said Mayor of Redbridge, Cllr Jyotsna Islam.

The parade was made possible through generous support from local business sponsors, coordinated and headed by Suresh Kumar of Indra Travels, contributing to the success and vibrant display of unity and community spirit at the London New Year’s Day Parade.

The collaborative efforts of Redbridge and Rotary in London, in donating these engaging books, echoed a shared commitment to nurturing future environmental leaders. Through inspiration and education, the initiative sought to instill a profound sense of responsibility towards environmental conservation and preservation, empowering the younger generation to advocate for our planet’s protection.
