Exploring Bogura’s Mahasthan Archaeological Museum

The Mahasthan Archaeological Museum is a remarkable repository of Bengal’s ancient history and culture. It is committed to safeguarding history. It is located near the old Mahasthangarh and the Karatoa River in the Shibganj Upazila of the Bogura district.

The museum, created in 1967, showcases North Bengal’s enormous archaeological record by preserving items from many historical periods, including the Maurya, Gupta, and Pala dynasties.

Historical Significance

The museum commemorates Mahasthangarh historical importance as the capital of ancient Pundravardhana, previously known as “Pundranagara.”

The structure was erected to recognise the region’s archaeological significance and to preserve and exhibit the discoveries made at Mahasthangarh and its vicinity, including Paharpur, Dinajpur, and Sherpur.

What to See

The museum’s collection includes:

•             Ancient artefacts: Gold and silver coins, bronze items, and inscriptions.

•             Terracotta sculptures: Beautifully crafted figures and plaques from different periods.

•             Weapons and tools: Used for self-defence and daily activities in ancient times.

•             Architectural elements: Stone carvings, black basalt, and sandstone statues, along with clay tablets.

•             Miscellaneous relics: Pottery, beads, buttons, and ornaments of various metals and stones.

The Govinda Vita mound, situated just across from the museum, enhances the tourist experience by offering a picturesque green setting.

However, the Karatoa River loses some of its grandeur and adds to the overall sense of history.
