While many perceive change as a positive development, it can also trigger emotions of insecurity, fear, and anxiety. In contemporary Bangladesh, the general political and social scene has led many to view change not as a pathway to liberation or progress but as a form of control. Silencing dissenting voices diminishes dialogue, fear undermines freedom, and change begins to feel imposed rather than embraced.

Bangladeshis have faced numerous challenges, including violence and bloodshed, in their pursuit of independence and democratic governance. They are reflecting on whether their sacrifices were futile and whether their freedoms are waning again. A sense of apprehension about the severe challenges to these values has replaced the nation’s assertive stance. Recent political shifts have prompted an examination of whether those in power genuinely serve the interests of the populace or merely use them to govern.

The ability to express oneself freely, critique the government, and feel secure is essential for a thriving democracy. A society that lacks these flourishes faces challenges related to faith, suspicion, and paranoia, which, as many may have noticed, is our current situation. Change should empower us and inspire a collaborative approach, focussing on safety rather than fear.

We are now closely examining Bangladesh, known for its development achievements, as it transitions from a nation known for its ideological and cultural moderation to one confronting challenges with extremism. This raises an important question—should we view this as the United States embracing its foundational principles, a revival of liberty and democracy in contrast to what history has shown us?

Bangladesh is at a crossroads, and the path it chooses will define its legacy.
