I am privileged to dedicate this editorial to Cllr. Jyotsna Islam, an exceptional ethnic community leader, for her kind, relentless efforts, particularly within the Bengali community. Jyotsna Rahman was born in Neasden, London Borough of Brent Council. Her father, Mr. Abdur Rahman (Monaf Miah), was a prominent merchant and community activist in the 1960s.
In 1975, he relocated his family to Bangladesh and instilled in them cultural values. At the tender age of 9, Jyotsna Rahman swiftly mastered Bengali under her parents’ tutelage. In 1986, Mr. Rahman suffered a severe vehicle collision during his visit to London, leading to his hospitalisation.
After graduating with a Bachelor of Science, Jyotsna Rahman visited her father in the UK and pursued employment thereafter. She earned a social work degree and an MBA in public services.
She finds fulfilment in aiding others, following in her father’s footsteps, and actively engaging in community development initiatives. After joining the National Political Labour Party in 2014, Jyotsna firmly believes the platform of engagement holds greater significance than simply clamouring for change.
Her unwavering determination led both her and her husband to secure councillor positions in 2018. Before becoming a councillor, she completed thorough studies and shadowed a lawmaker for a year. Throughout her illustrious political career, she has held numerous local roles.
She took office as mayor on May 16, 2024, following her tenure as deputy mayor from 2020 to 2021. Her colleagues and well-wishers fondly dubbed her “Wonder Woman.” This is due to her involvement in numerous national and international projects. Her dedication, hard work, generosity, and approach to the people will propel another Bangladeshi MP into office. Her ultimate aspiration is to secure a seat in the British Parliament.
