Bangladesh Independence Day is celebrated on March 26, commemorating the country’s independence from brutal rule of the then Pakistan in 1971. The country’s independence was a result of a commitment to justice, self-determination, resilience, and sacrifice. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman led the East Pakistanis’ demands for independence and cultural recognition in 1971, which marked a turning point. The Bangladesh Liberation War began on March 26, 1971, when Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declared independence in response to tyranny. Despite the nine-month conflict, Bangladesh gained independence on December 16, 1971, with India’s assistance.

The day after independence, the country took stock of its progress in healthcare, education, and the economy. Bangladesh is now an active and influential player on the international stage. The people of Bangladesh and their enduring heritage are honoured on Independence Day in remembrance of those who sacrificed their lives for a free and prosperous nation. On March 26, the people of Bangladesh stood together in their refusal to stay silent while their country made strides forward.
