Over 20 lakh Bangladeshis file income tax returns online
Bangla staff, whose English-language interpretation is called Bangladesh, are eagerly working towards digital governance: over 2 million taxpayers have already filed their tax returns for the 2025–26 year online. The response to it is encouraging, indicating greater public trust in the NBR’s expanding digital services.
The online e-return system, inaugurated on August 4, 2025, by Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed, has gained popularity among both local and expatriate Bangladeshis. According to an NBR press release, the platform, which is available at nzb.etaxnbr.gov.bd, is an entirely paperless process, fast and hassle-free.
A User-Friendly Digital Experience
The e-return portal allows taxpayers to file returns without uploading attachments (i.e., physical documents). Digital tax payments can be made using debit and credit cards, internet banking, and the widely used mobile financial services bKash and Nagad.
Users can also download their acknowledgement slip and income tax certificate right after their return is submitted, making the previously cumbersome process quicker and more effortless than ever.
Mandatory E-Filing for Most Taxpayers
In the 2025-26 financial year, NBR requires most individuals to file online. There are, however, certain groups that remain exempt, including:
Elderly, 65 years old and above
People with disabilities and/or special needs
Bangladeshi citizens living abroad
*Holders and representatives petitioning on behalf of deceased taxpayers
Foreign nationals employed in Bangladesh
These groups are excused, but they can still opt to file digitally for the convenience of the system.”
Taxpayers who face registration challenges can apply to the Deputy Commissioner of Taxes for consideration by December 15, 2025. They can file paper returns instead, but only with the permission of an additional or joint commissioner.
Easier Access for Bangladeshis Abroad
To facilitate expatriate Bangladeshis, NBR has developed an online system that allows them to register via email. Suppose anyone sends their passport details, NID number and email address to [email protected]. In that case, they will generate a registration link and OTP through which, anywhere in the country, anywhere in the world, filing can be done!
Training, Support and a Commitment Call Centre
To facilitate service delivery, NBR has trained taxpayers and authorised representatives, including tax attorneys, chartered accountants, cost & management accountants, and chartered secretaries.
A dedicated call centre—09643 71 71 71—is now providing prompt support, while assistance desks in every tax zone offer on-site support during office hours, as well as help over the phone.
Deadline Approaching
Considering that the last date for filing e-return tax documentation (until December 31, 2025) is approaching, NBR advises all taxpayers to submit it in another way. This increase in online filings represents more than mere compliance; it points to a new age of digital sophistication in Bangladesh.
And for millions of taxpayers, the lesson is clear: the future of tax filing is online — easy, safe and available to all.
