The Interim government of Bangladesh, under the leadership of Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, has repeatedly committed to its people and the international community that the national election will be held in February 2026.
This commitment is ambitious, and it is also the mandate necessary for a country beginning to return to democratic normalcy after years of political damage and trauma. However, optimism cannot eliminate current uncertainty.
The truth is that while electoral reforms, reconstruction and re-establishment of state institutions, political representation, and public confidence are key critical tasks in progress, no one is certain whether the government is capable of or keen to fulfil its promise.
The question for Bangladesh is not whether the vote will be held in 2026, but rather how it would be executed. A ballot conducted on time and for the wrong reasons is pointless. It is only through a commitment to openness, inclusivity, and progress that the Interim government will be able to validate that February 2026 is a legitimate milestone, but not a promise.
