The ‘Hema Committee report regarding women’s safety in the Malayalam film industry has sparked significant controversy within the Tollywood sector. Recently, several performers have shared their experiences regarding sexual harassment.
The Kerala government is currently considering initiating legal action against them. Additionally, actress Ritabhari Chakraborty suggested establishing an organization similar to the Hema body within the Tollywood industry.
On August 26th, Ritabhari shared a post on social media directed towards her female colleagues. It was essential to participate in an open dialogue regarding the persistent issue of sexual harassment faced by women in the workplace.
We will not tolerate the daily sexual harassment and inappropriate propositions made by those in positions of power under the guise of job offers.
On Tuesday, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, extended an invitation to Ritabhari to engage in a discussion regarding this issue.
Ritabhari shared with the media that she had the opportunity to meet with the Chief Minister. She stated, “I have contacted the Chief Minister regarding the ongoing harassment happening in the industry disguised as employment provision.” I would like to see a comparable initiative in the Tollywood industry, similar to the efforts made by the Hema Commission in the Malayalam sector to address sexual harassment claims. The Chief Minister has approved the matter.
Five ministers from West Bengal have formed a committee. This group will review the Hema Commission’s report and outline the approach for conducting the investigative process in the state.
Ritabhari mentioned, “One of the committee members is a former Chief Justice.” Additionally, psychologists and solicitors are available. Neither the government nor anyone from the film industry is attending this event.
The committee’s establishment has alleviated concerns about prejudice, allowing females to openly report or express their thoughts.
