Bichanakandi

Sylhet’s Enchanting Stone-Bed Haven

A Peek into the Past & the Origin of Names

Bichanakandi (alternative spelling: Bichnakandi or Bichanakandi) is a village in Rustompur Union in Gwanghae Upazila in Sylhet District of Bangladesh. Its name is a Sylheti one: bichhana (bed), with kandi (cluster or dam), a soulful allusion to the flat plains of bog-land full of colourful boulders which acts like a natural rock bed.

Unsurpassed by its medieval structures, Bichanakandi geological work of art on the other hand establishes the backdrop further down the line as flowing rocks from the Khasi hills are collected by the banks of the Piyain river. It has no become a popular site for rock quarrying as stone for construction and ecotourism.

Where It Sits At a Borderland Confluence

Sited at around 25–40 km north of Sylhet city, Bichanakandi is near to the Bangladesh–India border. It is located at a peculiar junction of the Khasi Hills where several tectonic plates meet, giving the area its dramatic topography and making it prone to earthquakes, like Jaflong and Lalakhal.

The valley is drained by the streams which now cascading from Meghalaya forms here and there natural waterfalls, and which after mixing with the River Piyain, flows down a wide expanse of wave-worn boulders.
