Bangladesh loses final group stage match to South Korea

The Bangladesh men’s hockey team had a steep mountain to climb in their final Group B encounter of the Men’s Asia Cup against five-time champions South Korea at the Bihar Sports University Hockey Stadium in Rajgir, India. However, Bangladesh eventually lost 5–1, bringing an end to their group stage campaign.

A Blistering Beginning from South Korea

It didn’t take South Korea long to put its stamp on the game. Dain Son scored a brace, first in the 9th minute and then in the 11th minute inside the first quarter, taking his side to an early 2–0 lead. Korea kept up its unyielding attack in the second quarter as Seungwoo Lee notched the margin in the 16th minute before Seyong Oh added the second in the 22nd minute.

Down 4-0, Bangladesh needed something to switch the momentum. That initial spark arrived almost instantly as Shobuj scored a penalty corner goal in the 22nd minute, which meant Bangladesh wouldn’t go into halftime without a goal and give themselves some momentum.

Defensive Grit in the Third Quarter

Bangladesh did rally impressively after the break. Their backline stood firm for the entire third quarter, repelling Korean attacks in their defensive zone. It was that fighting spirit that showcased the team’s spirit and determination to rise against world-beaters.

Just when it seemed Bangladesh might not concede in the second half, Jihun Yang scored in the 60th and last minute to help the reigning Asian giants complete a 5–1 thrashing.

Bangladesh’s Campaign So Far

This allows Bangladesh to occupy third place on the Group B table with three points, having played the same number of matches. Their path began with a 4-1 loss at the hands of Malaysia, but they avenged the setback with an 8-3 victory over Chinese Taipei in their second game. However, they lost to South Korea in their final group match.

With the loss, Bangladesh is eliminated from championship contention, yet the campaign is still active. The squad will play in the 5th to 8th place classification matches, and their next game will be on 4th September.

Looking Ahead

Despite the loss, young back-court players Saymon and Sabby were potential bright spots for Bangladesh, whose aggressive attacking style, evident in their 45-16 victory over Chinese Taipei and their dogged 16-46 defensive stand against South Korea, bodes well for the future. As the event progresses, the team will strive to finish strong and apply the experience and lessons learned to develop for future competitions.
