Quintessence of Nazrul Debuts in English
Finally, Bangladesh’s National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam has transcended the language barrier in a definitive new manner with his fiery verses and soulful melodies. Marking a milestone for the literary world, the National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam Institute formally unveiled Quintessence of Nazrul – the English translations of everything penned by the Rebel Poet – at its Dhaka auditorium on February 3, 2026.
A Bridge to the World
The event, where high-quality discussion was mixed with exciting performances, featured Cultural Affairs Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki as the chief guest. Speaking at the launch of the book, Farooki said that translation was only the beginning of a much longer process.
“It’s a really great idea to bring Nazrul to the international platform,” Farooki said. “But we have to not let them stay within our borders. We need to find a way to share his legacy with the world.”
Farooki’s call was unambiguous: the post-2024 cultural field of Bangladesh is to be founded on self-respect and is “Bangladesh-focused”, with spreading Nazrul’s message of rebellion and humanity as its core pursuit.
The “Universal” Rebel
IPWA keynote speaker, well-known researcher and professor Dr Irshad Ahmed Shaheen had already shared his memories of presenting Nazrul to international organisations. He added that the specialities of Nazrul’s work, which invariably mix social justice, spirituality and romanticism with ease, “amaze” audiences the world over.

Khilkhil Kazi: Poet’s granddaughter and chairperson of the institute’s trustee board.

Symphonic Recitations and Songs
The auditorium then transformed into the very art the new book hopes to preserve. Legendary Nazrul Sangeet singers Ferdous Ara, Dr Nashid Kamal, Yakub Ali Khan, and Salauddin Ahmed performed solo at the event, delighting the audience.
If further proof were needed that the English version is ready for the stage, Nasim Ahmed and Shima Islam both delivered readings of Nazrul in English on their own, demonstrating that the power of the “Rebel Poet” travels unadulterated across languages.
