As the seasons change, so does Bengal’s environment and manner of life. Right now, the Bangla calendar shows that the month of Kartika has begun. The initial two months of Hemantkal in Bangladesh are known as Kartik-Agrahayan. Hemant is a lovely season that makes its adherents laugh and cry.
There are several reasons why this season stands out. Morning dew, moist grass, and gentle fog are the natural world’s winter messengers. Part of Hemanta’s shape is the golden, ripe paddy growing in the field; part of it is the farmer carrying the paddy home, and part of it is the farmers’ joy. Hemanta, cloaked in variety, rules supreme in nature. During the Hemant season, there are games for both summer and winter. One mood is associated with the start of menstruation, while the other relates to the season’s conclusion. Dew covers the fields first thing in the morning, a thin layer of fog covers the sky, and the temperature climbs slowly. With appealing qualities and attributes, Lalima becomes the queen of the seasons in Bengal Hemant.
In agriculture-oriented Bangladesh, the main crop of paddy grows in this season. Loans from moneylenders for the whole year are repaid only after the harvest. Food supply for the entire year also comes at this time. Hemant is a time of happiness and prosperity. So, the smile on the face is a little more than that of the people of Karthik’s Navanna country at other times.
When Hemant comes, nature and people change. There is joy in the atmosphere of the village.
In Hemante, the auditory landscape is defined by the clinking of drinks, the rhythmic preparation of pitas moving from house to house, and the vibrant atmosphere of village fairs, each contributing to a distinct auditory identity. This season features the emergence of several notable plants: Gandharaj, Mallika, Shiuli, Kamini, Himjhuri, Dev Kanchan, Raj Ashok, Chatim, and Buckful. The grass retains moisture from the dew, and a slight mist envelops the morning as nature prepares for the day. Alongside the initiation of new potato harvesting, the trees are preparing to gather date sap as part of their seasonal cycle.
